If you live in a property that shares a communal gas, electricity or water supply, the cost of this will sometimes be divided between all residents and the proportion added to your rent. You will not then receive a bill. However, if these charges are not included in the rent you pay, you may be billed for them separately

Additional charges may also be levied for communal services such as cleaning, gardening, security, etc

Tenants in sheltered (retirement) housing will also be liable for a support charge where this is not paid by the Council through Housing Benefit. If you pay your own rent then you will also have to pay your support charges

Tenants are informed of any charges when they sign their tenancy agreement, and will be informed of an changes in writing well in advance
